Posted: March 24, 2011 Filed under: Marketing | Tags: business, coffee, marketing, seattle, starbucks 2 Comments »I read an interesting article today about a new mom-and-pop coffee shop that is starting up in Seattle. Aren’t you just “pulling” for the little guy… trying to take on the big shots who have dominated every corner in the city. But wait. The little guy isn’t really the little guy. The decor is quite kitsch. The coffee is great and my latte tastes just like it does when I order from S-T-A-R-B-C-U-C-K-S, gasp! It’s Starbucks disguised as the little guy but the Starbucks logo is noticeably absent. That changes everything. Doesn’t it?

I spent two days in Dallas, over the weekend, and I was able to collect some excellent brochures for my visual design class. One of the coolest examples was from the cupcake store called Sprinkles that began in Beverly Hills. Dallas has a location now and I love going in their shop because it’s so visually stunning. They have wonderfully designed print media and all their packaging is beautiful. Another company with great print design is Paciguo Gelato & Caffe. Their brochure features an adorable Italian man wearing a fedora. His moustache is dripping with the colors of the gelato. It’s really well done.

We’ve been learning about environmental monitoring in several of my classes so I set up RSS Feeds to read articles about Starbucks. (I had to pick a company to research and since I know quite a bit about Starbucks, I decided to cover the Seattle-based coffee giant. I read Pour Your Heart Into It by Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz, several years ago and have kept my eye on his company ever since.
